A pressure cooker, or Instant Pot, is the quickest way to cook dried red beans. This simple and efficient recipe will give you perfectly cooked red beans that are ready to use in a variety of dishes!

Jump to:
Red beans are a popular legume known for their vibrant color, creamy texture, and earthy flavor. Rich in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients like iron and folate, they are a versatile and nutritious addition to countless recipes, from traditional red beans and rice to zesty bean salads.
I love using a pressure cooker to prepare red beans for several reasons:
โข It's Fast! Cooking unsoaked red beans in an Instant Pot saves you 1-2 hours compared to stove-top cooking.
โข It's Convenient! No need for constant stirring or monitoring. Just press a few buttons and let the Instant Pot handle it.
โข Consistency! The Instant Pot ensures even cooking and a perfect texture for dried beans every time.
Let's dive into making delicious dried red beans in your Instant Pot!
Step-by-Step Instructions

- Step 1 Rinse the Beans: Using a colander, rinse the dried red beans thoroughly under cold water. This removes any dirt or debris from storage. Discard any damaged or discolored beans.

- Step 2 Prepare the Pot: Add the rinsed beans to the bowl of the Instant Pot or pressure cooker. Cover them with water, ensuring the beans are submerged by at least an inch of liquid. Add salt and stir. Seal the Instant Pot lid securely.

- Step 3 Pressure Cook: Cook on high pressure for 28 minutes (unsoaked). Once done, allow the pressure to release naturally for 15 minutes, then perform a quick release to vent any remaining pressure.

- Step 4 Check Consistency: Taste-test the beans for your preferred level of tenderness. If they're not soft enough, cook for another 5 minutes and perform a quick release.

- Step 5 Drain and Use: Drain the cooked red beans and use them immediately, or store for later use.
Why Skip Soaking?
Soaking dried beans helps them cook faster, but it isn't necessary when using an Instant Pot. While presoaking can save some time on the stove, it only reduces pressure cooking time by about 20 minutes, making it more convenient to skip this step altogether.
If you prefer to pre-soak your beans, feel free to do so by following these methods:
If you do presoak the red beans, pressure cook them on high for 7 minutes, followed by a 15 minute natural release.
How Many Beans Should I Make?
โข 1 cup of dried red beans makes about 2.5 cups of cooked beans.
โข A 15-ounce can of red beans equals about 1.5 cups of cooked beans.
Flavor Variations
This recipe is intentionally plain to keep the beans versatile, but here are some ways to infuse flavor while cooking:
- Sautรฉ garlic and onions in the Instant Pot before adding the beans.
- Substitute water with broth (vegetable, chicken, or beef) for a richer flavor.
- Add herbs like bay leaves, thyme, or rosemary for a subtle earthy taste.
- Toss in sautรฉed bacon or smoked sausage for a smoky, savory twist.
Storing Pressure Cooked Red Beans
Refrigerator
Store cooked your Instant Pot red beans in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
Freezer
Allow the beans to cool completely before transferring to freezer-friendly containers to avoid freezer burn. Freeze for up to 6 months.
Tip: Cook a large batch and freeze portions for quick meals.
