How to Cook Oat Groats

Oat groats are the delicious whole version of oatmeal. They are easy to make on the stove, taste delicious, and are very healthy.

Step 1

Start by rinsing  the oat groats under cool water.

Step 2

Add oats and water into a medium sauce pot.  Bring to a boil.

Step 3

Once boiling, cover and turn to low.  Simmer for about 50 mins.

The oat groats are done when they are soft but still have a chewy texture.  If you like them a little chewier you can simmer for 45 minutes.  If you’d like to make them as soft as possible, simmer for up to 60 mins.

If you choose to simmer them for a long time, all of the water may get absorbed.  If this happens, the grains will start burning to the bottom of your sauce pot, so you’ll want to add another ½ cup of extra water or so.

Step 4

Once grains have reached desired chewiness, drain any extra water.

Step 5

Top with the oat groats with the ingredients of your choice and enjoy!
